Police in Kasese are holding a man suspected to have murdered his wife and dumped the body in a banana plantation.

The man, identified as Jockim Mukuke, 26, is suspected to have killed Juliano Muhindo, 23 and wrapped the body in a sack before dumping it.

John Baluku, a resident of Mahango, said Muhindo was strangled by her husband after refusing to give him money to buy waragi.

"He went and asked for money from the woman to buy alcohol and when the woman refused to give it to him, he strangled her to death," Baluku said.

Baluku said they found the body with several wounds around the neck and that Mukuke had attempted to bury the body.

Mukuke then fled the area and went to Mpondwe in Lhubiriha town council, where he attempted to commit suicide by drinking poison.

Jackson Mugisa, a neighbour of the deceased, told Police detectives that the suspect was a drug addict, which caused domestic wrangles.

Following the death of Muhindo, her relatives and the angry residents descended on the home of Mukuke in Mpndwe-Lhubiriha town council and burnt three houses and destroyed several acres of coffee plantations.

Eric Maathu, the Mahango sub-county chairperson, said cases of domestic violence in the area are on the increase.

"We need to sensitise the people on the dangers of domestic violence because many people are being killed as a result," Maathu said.

He said the suspect had been arrested after the incident and police have launched investigations into the murder.
