The annual Uganda Sports Press Association Road Safety Campaign starts today with a memorial service in memory of fallen scribes who have passed on over the years.

The campaign received a sh5m boost from Standard Chartered Bank on Monday ahead of the event to be held in Wobulenzi on Saturday.

The bank's Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing Cynthia Mpanga presented the cheque to USPA top executive members led by their president Sabiiti Muwanga at the Bank's boardroom.

Mpanga said the bank was committed to supporting USPA in the road safety campaign to support the continuity of its agenda of creating awareness about road safety and carnage, to save the lives of Ugandans.

"We are keen on this campaign because we share certain aspects with USPA in regard to social responsibility and this road safety campaign touches the soul of sustainability and what affects us all. All of us are affected in one way or the other so we can't isolate ourselves," Mpanga said.

"It is a concern for each one of us to heed to the call and respect human dignity and ensure there is discipline on the roads. We believe it is a great cause because we have had families losing their loved ones as a result of indiscipline on the road. We need to change our attitude, conduct and create more awareness. But we are also associated with sports which is the other facet for our involvement with USPA," Mpanga stated.

USPA president Sabiiti Muwanga said this year's campaign starts today with a church service at 9am at Christ the King Church today while the other partners KCCA FC will engage Boda Boda riders in Kamwokya and donate life jackets tomorrow before the main activities of the campaign in Wobulenzi.

He said there will also be related activities in Mbale and Masindi on a small scale as a way of spreading the campaign.

"We thank Standard Chartered Bank for partnering with us consistently for the last 17 years and participating in the event, so we are very grateful for this offer," Muwanga said.He said they will also provide man power and tents to ensure a smooth function in Wobulenzi before calling on everyone to be responsible as they use the roads.
