Rukiga elects NRM flag bearers

On the other hand, Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi won the race for NRM district Woman Member of Parliament after scooping 12,390 votes representing 39.4 percent of the total vote.

Dr. Alexander Kampikaho, the former aspirant in the 2016 Rukiga County Member of Parliament elections was on Wednesday morning declared the winner of the NRM race for the Rukiga district Chairperson LCV.

Kampikaho's victory came after he scooped 15,551 votes representing 48.7 percent of the total vote while his closest rival Denis Nkwasibwe got 11,479 votes representing 36 percent. Jackson Rwamwehare Asiimwe came last with 4,375 votes representing 13.8 percent.

On the other hand, Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi won the race for NRM district Woman Member of Parliament after scooping 12,390 votes representing 39.4 percent of the total vote.

She was followed by Victoria Abigail Atukunda with 10,868 votes representing 34.5% while Pamela Kihumuro got 3,384 votes representing 10.8%. Maureen Kyarisiima came in the fourth position with 2, 861 votes representing 9.1%.

Alice Bashobokwe followed with 806 votes representing 2.6% while Charity Tumubweine trailed with 756 votes representing 2.4%.

Rukiga district NRM registrar, Maurice Keitaba Mugenga declared the winners at 3:48 am at the Rwamucucu Sub-county headquarters.

Keitaba asked the losers in this election to desist from standing as independent candidates in the general elections since it was a free and fair election.

After his declaration, Kampikaho promised to promote the party principles as he joins the biggest race.

Caroline Muhwezi thanked her supporters for making her victory possible and called upon all her contenders in the race to support her in the forthcoming elections.

"Every election has a winner and a loser. I beg those that were in the same election with me to stand with us in the general election for the unity and togetherness of NRM," said Muhwezi.

According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, the election never registered serious crimes.

"We had heavily deployed in the area following its history in electoral violence. We never encountered any serious cases in this process," said Maate

The Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda asked NRM supporters in the district to maintain harmony after this election as they move towards the general elections.

"As a new district, Rukiga deserves a strong and united leadership. Now that the NRM has decided, let this unity and tranquility prevail as the process for electing the new district leaders continues," said Rugunda.
