UPC weighs in on public servants' dress code

KAMPALA - The Uganda People's Congress (UPC) party has backed government's renewed directive on publice servants' dress code.

Miniskirts, tinted or brightly coloured hair, tight trousers, non-black shoes feature on the banned dressing.

The fresh directive has got the public talking, with mixed views at that. Some public personalities have also weighed in.

UPC spokesperson Michael Osinde Orach called it a "very good" that will ensure that civil servants dress decently.

"The directive by the government is very good although it has started from above. The government should have started by sensitizing people in schools and other institutions on decent dress code," he said in Kampala, after the party's weekly press briefing.

"They have been banned from civil servants but the rest of members of public will continue wearing them because there has been no sensitization on proper dress code."

Osinde told New Vision that the Ministry of Public Service should investigate what leads civil servants to dress inapproriately and forge a long-term solution for it.

"After finding the cause, government can set revised regulation regarding the matter and necessary punishment to the perpetuators."
