Nine killed in Masaka road accident

Nine people have been confirmed dead and nine others seriously injured in a fatal accident at Kalandaazi, Buwama Sub County in Mpigi district on the Masaka -Kampala highway.
 
The accident involved a commuter taxi registration number UAW 171W that was heading to Kampala from Masaka and a Toyota Premio registration number UAM 215B heading in the opposite direction.
 
According to the eyewitnesses, the accident happened at about 4:30pm on Sunday when the speeding commuter taxi which was overtaking other vehicles failed to break, its tyre burst and it rammed into a Toyota premio. The taxi swerved off the road and overturned several times and the Toyota Premio plunged into a nearby swamp.
 
The injured victims with broken limbs were rushed to Gombe hospital in Butambala district.
 
Mpigi district Police Commander, Ahamad Kimera Sseguya said police were yet to identify the deceased and the survivors.
 
Last week, while officiating at the marathon to mobilize funds to build a ward for accident victims at Nkozi hospital, the speaker of Parliament Rebecca kadaga appealed to all motorists on Masaka - Kampala highway to be disciplined and avoid speeding.
 
Kalandazi where the accident happened is listed as a death corridor on the Masaka-Kampala highway and it has been a scene of many fatal accidents.
 
The Uganda traffic police are manning check points under what is described as the Fiika Salama operation meant  to deal with errant drivers. One of the check points is at Kalandazi The ill fated taxi had just passed the check when the accident occured.
