Sugarcane price remains high

The price of sugarcane is not sweet any more!


Ivan Kiberu, a market vendor at Matugga Market says sugarcanes are now scarce on the market because they are off season. As such, whatever supply that is available comes at a higher cost for the buyer.

For the last two months, 14 'Goa' (green) sugarcanes having been costing sh25, 000 and 10 canes for sh20, 000. One such cane ranges from sh1,500 to sh3,000 depending on the size.

If you want yours peeled, a small polythene bag of about 12 pieces of sugarcane range from sh500 to sh1,000.

The red-purple type are cheaper. Fourteen of these cost sh10,000 and 10 are at sh8,000.

Sugarcanes have health benefits, including helping to cure flu and cough at an early stage, according to nutritionist Lameck Kizito in Kabalagala.

They contain vitamin A that helps to keep hair moisturized.
