Policeman dies in Hoima accident

Eyewitnesses said a police dog jumped through the window at the time of the accident

A Police officer, Sam Marura is nursing critical injuries sustained from a fatal road accident that yesterday claimed the life of Police officer Francis Onekalit at Kwesiiga East Cell, Bujumbura division in Hoima Municipality.

Traffic Police spokesperson, Charles Ssebambulide, said Marura broke both limbs and was admitted in critical condition at Hoima Referral Hospital.

According to Ssebambulide, the two Police officers attached to the canine department were travelling back to their station, Kyarushesha Police Post in Kyangwali Sub County, after tracking a suspect linked to a robbery, by the help of a sniffer dog.

"The driver of motor vehicle registration number UAW 750B Toyota Premio lost control due to speeding and knocked an electric pole along the road," said Ssebambulide in a telephone interview.

He added that investigations were under way vide case reference number TAR 46/2017 at Hoima Central Police Station.

It has emerged that the dog survived without sustaining injuries.

Eyewitnesses said the police dog jumped through the window at the time of the accident which occurred at about 4pm.

By the time they responded to rescue the victims from the wreckage, the dog was barking endlessly at the scene of crime.
