Yusuf Naraba was arrested on Tuesday evening in an operation which was led the regional Professional Standard Unit officer Benon Turyasingura.

The officer in charge of Mella police post in Tororo district has been arrested for allegedly soliciting bribe from Chinese business men.

Yusuf Naraba was arrested on Tuesday evening in an operation which was led the regional Professional Standard Unit officer Benon Turyasingura.

Naraba was reported to have received a bribe of sh500,000 from certain Chinese people who were trying to smuggle out Gas cylinders to Kenya using illegal path through river Malaba.

The Bukedi regional police spokesperson Sowali Kamulya confirmed that the officer first ordered his junior officers to intercept 25 gas cylinders after getting a tip from his crime preventers who acted faster and took the cylinders to the sub county police post.

He said after intercepting the cylinders, it was established that he asked the owners to give him sh500,000 in order to have their cylinders released and out of pressure they responded and later reported to the Professional Standard Unit (PSU).

Kamulya disclosed that according to the owners of the cylinders, they had all together 125 cylinders and had chance to clear 100  of them with the Uganda Revenue Authority but ran short of money to clear off the remaining 25 cylinders and opted to use illegal route to evade taxes.

He said the empty gas cylinders were destined to Mombasa for refilling.

On lookers said during the arrest of the officer, his junior officers fled to different directions since they have mastered the geographical location of the area and this made it difficult for the team to arrest them.

The arrest comes barely a month after two other police officers were earlier arrested over forcing their complainants into having sexual intercourse with them.

Gerald Kasede the community liaison officer was caught having sex with a complainant in the police barracks and has since been suspended while Michael Wuubo the officer in charge of Bison police post was charged with scandalous behavior after luring a senior six students into having sex with him.
