Schools badminton: Taibah hope to rediscover winning touch

Not winning the Taibah Schools Badminton Tournament for the last five editions is no excuse for the sponsors to pull out of the annual event starting this Friday at Lugogo.

Taibah last won a trophy in 2012 after former students Daniel Mihigo and Brenda Mugabi won the boys' and girls' singles respectively.

But according to the schools headteacher Madina Mugenyi, they still have hope of winning titles alongside their intention to grow the sport.

"The reason we partnered with Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) is to try to develop and promote the sport and winning trophies will come as a bonus," she said at a press conference as they unveiled this year's sponsorship package at the Taibah School in Kawempe, Kampala.

"We want to be an example to other schools to also come out and promote sports in the country."

Taibah sponsored the 17th edition with among others trophies and t-shirts that amounted to about sh6m.

In the most competitive category, Tracy Naluwooza will be battling participants including U-13 champion Fadhila Shamika in a bid to reclaim the title she lost last year.

Other including Chantal Natukunda, Musa Bukenya, Paul Makande, Bridget Nakasi, Expedito Emudu, Brenda Awori and Brian Kasirye will also be defending the U-10, U-13, U-15 and U-19 boys and girls titles respectively.
