Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has procured 108 trucks to boost the road maintenance fleet across the country.
The first batch of forty 15 ton Chinese Foton trucks were flagged off to respective districts by Allen Kagina , UNRA executive after tentative training of drivers on their maintenance.
The beneficiaries include, Mubende, Kampala, Mpigi Kitgum , Arua, Luweero among others and to be used in carrying of marram, hardcore stones among other materials for road works.
Each of the forty trucks valued at $65,000 about Sh267m are to beef up the existing road equipment like the water bowser trucks ,truck loaders among others at respective UNRA stations.
Kagina said each of the 23 UNRA stations has to be equipped with five trucks to address challenges of bad roads and bridges.
"All the road construction equipment are limited to road works and for any emergencies, applications must be made in writing to minimize the wear and tear costs. ," said Kagina.
She said after equipping all the stations with required road construction units, she will not expect any excuses for failure of over 20,000Km road network under UNRA mandate.
Currently is UNRA is disposing off some of the old road equipment they inherited from the ministry of works for repeated breakdown with increased maintenance costs.
"We have so far recruited enough staff that must match with the existing tools to connect Uganda with efficient road network," said Kagima.
The ministry of works and transport is expected to bring in more road maintenance equipment in a few months to come of which UNRA and other institutions are expected to get a share.
Kagina urged her staff to redeem the image of the institution by being exemplary in what they do.
"A single mistake by one staff tarnishes the image of others in the institution. Live by example by doing what is required of you rightly and at the right time, 'she said
