Vipers Sports Club will play their CAF Confederations Cup matches at their new stadium in Kitende, off Entebbe Road.
The St Mary’s Stadium will be completed in February ahead of the club’s CAF Confederations Cup first leg preliminary encounter against Comoros side Volcan de Moroni.
“The stadium will be finished by then and we shall not only host our CAF matches but also our Azam Premier League second round,” confirmed club president Lawrence Mulindwa on Thursday.
Mulindwa took journalists on a tour of the stadium which when complete will be Uganda’s second biggest, after Mandela National Stadium, with a capacity of over 20,000.
The former FUFA boss is solely financing the project which when complete will be Uganda’s first such facility owned by an individual.
Mulindwa, who is also honorary FUFA president, also used Thursday’s occasion to deliver an end of year message to the football fraternity.
He thanked the Uganda Cranes, President Yoweri Museveni, the Education and Sports ministry, FUFA, sponsors, fans and the media for Uganda’s qualification for the Nations Cup.
Mulindwa (pictured above) appealed to Ugandans to also support the team in Gabon. He noted that the Cranes have the potential to also shine in their first appearance on the big stage in 39 years.
Work on the southern wing of the stadium began in June and is almost complete.
Besides having a grand stand, the wing also has conference rooms, a hall of fame, offices, gym, beverage room and rest rooms that include an executive wing.
The tiling and painting is almost complete just like work on the playing pitch. Plumbing works and grading of the outside parking are ongoing. Roofing of the stands will be complete in January.
