Student killed in accident

An outgoing student of Kyambogo University who was traveling to attend a funeral of a fellow student's mother in Dokolo was on Friday afternoon killed in road accident on Lira- Dokolo- Soroti Highway.

Lillian Apio, 23, from Apii in Kole district was traveling together with four others (in-laws) in a saloon car registration number UAD 812Y, Toyota Corolla commonly known as kikumi to attend a burial in Adok Sub County, Dokolo district.

The funeral was for Keren Odongo who passed on at Nsambya hospital due to cancer.

Apio who was due to graduate in January sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Agwata Health Centre III but her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital where she died as she was being taken to the theater.

Apio was engaged to Solomon Cankoma, an outgoing student of Makerere University and son to Lira lawyer Bosco Twontoo, their traditional marriage was slated to take place on November 5.
Twontoo said introduction was already done and they were going to finalise the traditional marriage on November 5.

The body was by press time lying in the mortuary waiting post mortem.

The DPC Dokolo Amis Kayondo Lukanga said the driver lost control when he tried to save a cyclist at Agwata, near the forest reserve forcing it to overturn several times.

 

The DPC said the cyclist is reported to have jumped off the bicycle before he was hit and fled into the bush and has not been seen.

The vehicle was being driven by Jimmy Emmanuel Ogwang who also sustained injuries.
Wisdom Adupa, 21, was also seriously injured and transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital. Daniel Adilo Obote miraculously survived with bruises as he was thrown out of the vehicle through the windscreen.

The fate of one other occupant of the vehicle is not known as they were not seen just like the cyclist.

The DPC said there has been three hit and run accidents on the same highway since January.
The cause of the accident was attributed to high speed.
