Uganda is ranked 8th globally in alcohol consumption

Consumption of sachet waragi in Teso sub-region is worrying leaders who say it has reduced the labour force.

According to the Kumi LC5 chairperson Christine Apolot, the youth who should be working have resorted to drinking which has affected their health and ability to work.

A survey done by US broadcaster CNN two years ago indicated that Uganda ranked top in Africa in alcohol consumption.

Uganda is ranked 8th globally ahead of Germany and Australia in positions 9 and 10 respectively.

Apolot the first female to win the position of LC5 in Teso said church leaders, cultural leaders and politicians should embark on educating the youth on the dangers of drinking so that some can reform.

Ajon, a semi-fermented alcoholic drink taken from communal pots using long straws, which is most popular among the Iteso, is another of the country's favourite alcoholic drinks, the CNN study noted.
