Man 'kills granddad over bride price'

IBANDA - A man believed to have stabbed his grandfather to death following a reported disagreement has been arrested in Ibanda district.

Brian Matsiko had reportedly asked his grandfather, said to be in his 70s, for support in paying his bride price, which included four cows and sh1.5m.

But the old man, later named as George Katema, refused to help, according to his wife Florence Kentaro.

Residents of Rushaka II in Bisheshe division, Ibanda municipality found Katema lifeless with several stabs on his bloodied chest Thursday.

 Ibanda Police Station district police commander Ochama Dennis confirmed the killing and identified the victim, saying he succumbed to his wounds.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains under police custody as investigations get under way.

The officer in charge of investigations at Ibanda Police Station, Pande Grace Davis, said a case file has been opened against Matsiko. He faces charges of murder.
