Office of Lord Mayor illegal, says city lawyer

Peter Muliira, a Kampala lawyer has called for the abolishment of the office of the Lord Mayor saying it is unconstitutional.

Muliira was presenting a paper on issues of governance of the city, the law and the proposal to strengthen the administration of Kampala during the consultative stakeholders meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala on Friday.

He says the constitution indicates that Kampala shall be administered by the central government and it is unnecessary to let this office be elected by the public to cause contradiction of powers.

The Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has however challenged Muliira's assertion saying that he has interpreted the act wrongly because the law empowers the public to elect him in this position.

The meeting was also graced by the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, who asked the leaders in Kampala to work together and share knowledge to make Kampala a better city.

The minister for Kampala affairs, Beti Kamya, her deputy Benna Namugwanya, KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi, Kampala district Mayors, Members of Parliament and councillors were also in attendance.
