It is not yet known how the 48-year-old shot came about to pull the trigger on his wife.

A policeman in Kaberamaido district has been arrested for mortally shooting his wife after an alleged domestic misunderstanding.

Agnes Alujo, 27, died of her wounds on the way to hospital.

Her husband Sgt Moses Wafula, who is attached to Kaberamaido Central Police Station, is under police custody following the Sunday night shooting.

The incident happened at Kaberamaido police barracks at around 11.55pm local time, police said.

It is not yet known how the 48-year-old shot came about to pull the trigger on his wife but sources said the couple picked up a quarrel moments before.

Ahmed Madiri, the DPC of Kaberamaido, said police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving news of the shooting.

He said they found the woman alive but bleeding heavily inside their home and rushed her to Kaberamaido health centre IV and later Lwala Hospital. Both health facilities could not manage the emergency.

Alujo died on the way to Soroti Referral Hospital. She had been shot in the stomach.

The killer policeman is said to have been deployed on the fateful night and had returned to the barracks at the night with a firearm.

Police has opened a case of murder against Wafula, and he will appear in court to answer charges.

"If there was something wrong, he would have called on us and we iron out the matter," said the dead woman's father, Willian Ekwaku.

Some people who knew the couple claimed they had started their misunderstanding earlier - during daytime.

Among his colleagues, Wafula is known to be a quiet man and some were shocked by his act.
