Softball: Uganda in shock win against Ireland

Uganda’s troubles were not about to stop as they further suffered another defeat to the hosts, an embarrassing 13-0 in their last group match on Sunday.

There was a buzz about the Uganda Pearls following their surprise 12-8 win against Ireland in their opening game in the Women World Softball Championships on Friday.

They were playing better than expected and more entertaining with Skipper Esther Nakabugo finishing in the pitching circle.

Rosemary Jopaowitt and Crossley Amelia registered 2 RBIs apiece as Rukia Ajabo, Faith Agwang and Gladys Ocokuru  picked 2 strike outs each. Noel Apamakuru finished with a batting average of 1.0 on the way to a 12-8 victory against Ireland who were fancied ahead of the game.

But Uganda's happy moments were short lived when they faced an offensive juggernaut in Great Britain trailing 13-1 in their second game on sarturday.

Catharina Rauch, a technical coach on the team says "The girls had a good start to the tournament and we really didn't think it would be a momentous start though the second and third games were embarrassing but we get to learn for the future."

Uganda play Kenya Tuesday in hope for the final placement in the championship round robin.

The top two teams progress to the Championship Round Robin and last two to the Placement Round Robin.

Teams that progress to the Championship Round will be competing for positions 1-16 and Teams that are allocated to the Placement Round will be vying for positions 17 -31.
