Kiruddu Hospital now fully operational

Kiruddu General Hospital started operating on Monday with over 200 outpatients turning up for treatment and medical reviews.

On Tuesday over 100 inpatients from Mulago Referral hospital were taken to Kiruddu especially those that fall under the 14 clinics that were relocated to Kiruddu.

Director, Kiruddu Hospital, Dr. Charles Kabugo a senior consultant physician said the new hospital has capacity of 200 beds for inpatients.

"Beds and mattresses for inpatients have been brought in from Mulago Hospital. We have started receiving inpatients who have been at Mulago Hospital and are under the units that were relocated to Kiruddu Hospital. And also outpatients that come in and we realize they need to be admitted, we shall admit them," he said.

He however warned caretakers against going in big numbers to escort one patient saying it brings congestion at the hospital and the caretakers can also get infections.

The hospital shall be operating for 24 hours with over 100 health workers who will be putting up at the staff quarters.

The 14 clinics that have been relocated to Kiruddu are only those under the department of medicine and burns unit and these include; hypertension, thyroid, diabetes, kidneys, heart problems, infectious diseases, skin problems, diseases of the brain, lungs and burns.

The newly constructed health facility under Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is located in the neighborhood of Kiruddu on Buziga Hill, Makindye Division. 

Recently Mulago signed a memorandum of understanding with KCCA to manage the Kiruddu and Kawempe hospitals as renovations are ongoing at Lower Mulago. 

It is a temporary arrangement and when the renovations at Mulago are done, the units shall be relocated back to Mulago.

Clinics

Kabugo said every Monday the facility will be treating patients with hypertension and Thyroid.

Tuesday, Kidney and Pulmonary diseases, Wednesday, neurology, gastro-Intestinal diseases and diabetes. 

Thursday will be for patients with heart diseases and diseases of the blood scientifically known as hematology.

On Friday, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and joint conditions, while the skin clinic is open throughout the week.
