Besigye hasn't fulfilled requirements for planned demo - Police

If Besigye does not comply Police will block the demonstration

Police has written to Col. Kizza Besigye, the former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Presidential candidate, stating terms for allowing his planned demonstration on May 5th.

On April 25, Besigye wrote to Police notifying them about his plans to lead a demonstration from FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi to Nakivubo Blue Primary School.

But Police told Besigye in a letter delivered to him on Friday that his notification fell short of several requirements enumerated in Section 5 of the Public Order management Act.

Police told Besigye to present evidence of consent from the owner of the venue where the demonstrators will converge at the end of the day.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango told New Vision that if Besigye does not comply with all the requirements, they will not allow the demonstration.

The Electoral Commission (EC) in February declared President Yoweri Museveni winner of 2016 Presidential Elections but FDC refused to concede defeat. The party wants to use demonstrations to push for an audit of the results.

Efforts to speak to top leaders of the party about the Police response were futile as none of them, including the party spokesperson, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda was picking his calls.
