GOLF: Uganda to battle Kenya in Victoria Cup

Apr 19, 2016

The singles will involve one-on-one matches contested for by the 8 players from either country

The national amateur golf team will now turn their focus on the Victoria cup against Kenya after their third place finish at the Zone V Africa Golf Championships in Swaziland.

According to Uganda Golf Union president Johnson Omolo the new born biennial tournament is due at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi, in June.

The competition will be played under the Ryder Cup format with each country fielding 8 players in a match-play competition, of two singles rounds and two rounds of foursomes.

The singles will involve one-on-one matches contested for by the 8 players from either country while in the foursomes two players from Kenya will tee off against two players from Uganda in the same group, but play just one ball each, alternating shots. In the foursomes, the team with the lower score takes the hole.

"Other non-competing golfers from both countries will also have a chance to play but modalities are being worked on," Omolo said.

After the Ugandan team beat their counterparts from Kenya; twice in the East African challenge in Entebbe and Kigali in 2014 and 2015 and also bettering them at the Zone 5 in Swaziland, the Kenyan team will have a chance to ‘settle scores' against their neighbours.

Meanwhile Team Uganda will be without Ronald Otile and Daniel Baguma then, because the two will be away in South Africa attending a three-year scholarship sponsored by the Royal and Ancient Club of Scotland.

The two budding golfers from Toro Club returned with the team, but will soon fly out to Cape Town to attend college at the University of Pretoria pending acquisition of resident permits from the South African embassy.

Coach Amos Kamya will select another 6 golfers from those who made the cut at the qualifiers to team up with Adolf Muhumuza and Ronald Rugumayo for the assignment.
