One resident said the coupled were embroiled in family wrangles.

KABALE - A 26-year-old man in a remote village in Kabale district has hacked his wife to death before hanging himself inside their house.

Such was the spine-chilling scene that residents of Nyakabungo village in Ikumba sub-county woke up to Wednesday morning.

The man was identified as Atanasio Bafekuteta while his wife was named as wife Evalyne Tukamuhebwa, aged 23.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Matte confirmed the horrifying incident.

One resident, who asked not want to be named, said the coupled were embroiled in family wrangles, with the two accusing each other of stealing family crops and selling them off without the other party's knowledge.

"The woman accused the man of selling off harvested crops and spending all the money on drinking while the man also suspected the wife to be selling the harvest and taking the rest to her parents," he said.

The LCI chairman of the area, Turyahikayo Moses, said that he and his committee had in the past arbitrated a conflict between the two and that he hoped that they had reconciled.

The couple had children together.

It is suspected that Bafekuteta waited deep in the night when his wife and children were asleep and used a machete to kill her, before taking his own life.

Their bodies were first seen by their six-year-old son who woke up as usual to go to school, only to realize that his mother could not wake up to prepare food that he would carry to school for lunch.

Immediately, he rushed to his grandmother's home where he told her that her mother was in a pool of blood.

When the grandmother arrived at the house, she was terrified at what she saw and screamed, attracting other neighbours.

Police's Matte condemned the act and asked people with family problems to report to authorities like the church or police to find a solution without shedding blood.
