With a purse of sh10m up for grabs all the pros will be itching to outdo each other as they strive to cash in their first pay cheques of the year over a three-day, 54-hole competition

Professional golfers under the Uganda Professional Golfers Association are first in the fray as the annual Hima Cement Captain's Prize takes center stage next week at the Uganda Golf Club.

With a purse of sh10m up for grabs all the pros will be itching to outdo each other as they strive to cash in their first pay cheques of the year over a three-day, 54-hole competition starting Tuesday (March 15-17).

Last year's winner Denis Anguyo will be up against the likes of Deo Akope, Vincent Byamukama, Philip Kasozi and debutantes like Happy Robert, Ronnie Bukenya and Gerald Kabuye among others.

Hima Cement marketing director Allan Ssemakula unveiled the cash offer which is part of the whole sponsorship package totaling to sh70m, during a press conference hosted by outgoing UGC captain Henry Rugamba on Friday.

The sh60m goes to the main event of the tournament that is expected to attract over 150 golfers at Kitante on Saturday.

"We value strengthening of corporate stake holder relationship and we hope this sponsorship will help us demonstrate our commitment to the game of golf," Ssemakula said.

"The 14 year sponsorship seeks to bring budding golfers against those already established as they show case their talents and also help in building relationship. We know our contribution has been put in the right place as we believe sports plays a major role in developing our country and we happy to be part of the development," Ssemakula stated.

The tournament that will have different captains of golf clubs across the country brings an end to Henry Rugamba's two-year term as captain of UGC. Godfrey Onyango Matata or Professor Anthony Kerali will replace him following elections this week.

"I would like to thank Hima for sticking with the game for the past 14 years and for their generosity towards the Uganda Golf Club," Rugamba said.
