The national boxing team the Bombers has been aided with foodstuffs worth sh1.1m to boost its training in camp.

Local boxing promoter Sam Lukanga dubbed ‘Don King of Uganda' has extended aid to the team in camp at Lugogo National Council of Sports Hostel preparing for the last African qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Olympics scheduled for August this year.

Lukanga said the gesture was intended to cure the boxers from the home sickness especially during the public holiday for the national elections.

He said athletes need a lot of nutrients during training for big events and need to improve on the diet.

"Boxing is a difficult game and they do a lot of sacrifice to their bodies for the nation, therefore need to be assisted in this kind of training," noted Lukanga after handing over the foodstuffs to boxers," noted Lukanga.

He called on well wishers to aid the team because during the training they sacrifice their lives on behalf of all Ugandans.

Currently there are 19 boxers in the team where they intended to have a national team of 11 boxers though government through the NCS has released money for only six tickets for the trip, meaning well wishers can come in to sponsor the team for more boxers to make a full team for the championship.

The team is expected to travel by March 5 for the championship that starts March 9 in Yaoundé for the last qualifying championship for the Rio Olympics.

Bombers captain Rogers Semitala said the boxers are working tooth and nail to qualify for the Olympics.
