Edwin Ekiring who doubles as Uganda’s finest and Africa top seed, has kicked off the inaugural Kampala International Badminton Open by beating fellow countryman in round one on Friday at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.
Ekiring beat Israel Wanagalya in two-straight sets 21-7 and 21-17 to make it to the second round scheduled for Saturday at the same venue.
The victory also keeps the 84th world ranked player in contention for the men's singles title.
“I didn’t get any challenges in the first game though the most important thing now is to make sure I win all the remaining games,” he said.
The 32 year old is now scheduled to take on upcoming player and 12 year old Expedito Emuddu in the second round.
Meanwhile Ekiring’s renowned rival and Africa’s seed two, ranked 90th in the world, Jacob Maliekal is also still in the contest after beating Jacob Musisi 21-1 and 21-7 in the opening round. He is now set to face Allan Nkire ahead of the second round.
