Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) president Sabiiti Muwanga has urged members of the association to uphold and safe guard journalism ethics and the values on which the association was founded.

Muwanga was speaking after the annual memorial service in memory of all USPA members and journalists who have passed away since the formation of the association in 1970.

31 members were remembered and prayed for during the service at Christ the King Church on Wednesday.

The service is part of the annual USPA road safety campaign that has been held since USPA members; Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot, Francis Batte and Kenneth Matovu died in a motor accident in Lugazi in 2004.

"It is pertinent that we remember our fallen colleagues despite our religious differences. This service is not only for USPA members but even for us individuals who also take this opportunity to remember our own departed family members and friends," Muwanga said.

He called on the congregation to spread this year's USPA road safety campaign theme; "Be alert to avoid accidents", so that everyone is cautious before accidents happen to anyone.

"We felt we had a duty to educate the masses about proper road use, so we want everyone to be alert," Muwanga said before thanking the funders of the campaign; City Tyres and Standard Chartered Bank.

In his homily Rev. Fr. Nicholas Kayongo urged the congregation not to fear death because it is the one that gives us hope that we shall resurrect and meet the lord.

"Praying for the dead is a long tradition in the Catholic Church; it is very significant that we should always pray for the dead," Kayongo said before urging the journalists to put into practice the ethics of the profession.

The road safety campaign will end on Saturday with the election of a monument and a football match in Lugazi.

The memorial service was attended by among others FUFA CEO Edgar Watson, Standard Chartered Bank Phoebe Nakibuuka, Brussels Airlines Belinda Namutebi and sports minister spokesman Fred Kateregga among others.
