Police arrest Somali from Makindye guesthouse

The Police have in custody a man of Somali origin who was arrested at a Makindye guesthouse without documentation on him.

The man, who identified himself as Abduraman Saleh was arrested Wednesday morning from Executive Guest House Facilities Bar and Restaurant located on Makindye House of the World Cup that begins Thursday.

Police has lately called for vigilance following repeated terrorism threats by the Somalia based al shabaab targeting masses of people.

The operation that was led by RPC Kampala South, James Ruhweza after concerned staff at the guesthouse called police when they asked the man to identify himself and he had no documents on him.

Josephine Nakiganda, a staff at the guesthouse said Saleh took up residence on Monday and was paying sh20,000 daily for accommodation.

Saleh was found with marijuana when police searched his room.

Saleh, on interrogation, said he was waiting for his mother and brothers who were going to bring his luggage today Thursday.

Following his arrest, police carried out an operation in the area and places that were found with wanting security were closed. Makindye is a renowned recreational hub with several bars and guesthouses and is a favourite for football fans.

In July 2010, on the day of the World Cup final, terrorism manifested itself on Ugandan soil when terrorists killed scores of football fans at a bar in Kabalagala and Kyadondo rugby club.

Makindye guesthouse was a target that night, only the bomb did not go off. The manager of the place got suspicious of a ringing phone that had been left behind in a satchel and refused to pick it. It later turned out the bomb was to detonate the moment the call was picked.
