UGANDA will field teams at the 26th Africa Cup of Club Championship despite not having held a league this season. The competition, held every two years and is coming to Kampala for the first time, is set for January 11-19.

But Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) chairman Dunstan Nsubuga (inset), clarified that league champions and runners up in the 2012 league will compete in the event. The official was referring to the teams in the men’s league and those in the women’s event.

Champions Wanainchi and runners-up Kampala will carry the national flag in the men’s category. In the women’s category, the champions Weatherhead and Kampala, who were runners up, will take on the other top teams across the continent.

“These teams are still in position to represent the country considering that we did not have the league this year,” Nsubuga stated.

“We have written to the four teams and we shall replace them if there is no response regarding their readiness to represent the country.”

Uganda won the right as hosts earlier this year after Ghana’s bid was dismissed because of their outstanding debt with the Federation of International Hockey.

The competition, whose participation fee is yet to be announced, is one of the key activities on the Africa Hockey Federation schedule. UHA publicity Jackie Namyalo said Wednesday that 18 teams from seven countries have already confirmed their participation.

These include the champions Telkom Orange from Kenya and Egypt’s Sharkia who are holders of the women crown.
