“Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.” This was one of several messages that inspired Uganda’s Parliament team to glory in the just concluded East Africa Inter- Parliamentary Games.

Kampala central MP Muhammad Nsereko, who was the architect of Uganda’s title-winning feat in the football contest, pointed that: “It was team work and desire to win that inspired me to score many goals but most important was the determination to send a signal to the public that we need to develop sports.”

Nsereko emerged top scorer with six goals after striking twice in the fi nal as Uganda beat East African Parliament (EALA) 3-0 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Team captain Patrick Nsanja scored the other in the final that was also graced by President Yoweri Museveni.

Despite weighing 96kg, Honorable Sarah Netarisiyire also emerged top scorer with 52 goals in the netball competition. Tanzania won the title with a 35-33 victory.

“Yes I weigh 96kg, but I train fi ve times a week,” Netarisiyire pointed. The speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rebecca Kadaga, thanked all participants for their efforts in ensuring a successfull tournament. However, there was indiscipline exhibited during the netball final as Uganda battled Tanzania prompting the police to intervene.
