The number of children born with HIV/AIDS has reduced from 25,000 to 15,000, according to Dr. Kihumuro Apuuli, the Director General of the Uganda Aids Commission.

He pointed out that reduction spanned from October 2012 to October 2013, since the campaign against mother-to-child-transmission started.

Dr. Apuuli was speaking at the National Children's Thanksgiving Day and Gala event 2013 at Serena Hotel Victoria Ball room organized by Faridah Nambi Kigongo of the Nambi Children Initiative.

At the occasion, Rosemary Najjemba, the State Minister for Urban Development rallied all expectant mothers to test for HIV/Aids early so that they can save their newborn babies from getting infected.

Najjemba said it is possible to eliminate transmission of the deadly HIV virus from mother to child, a message re-echoed by organizer Nambi.

The Nambi Children’s Initiative and talk show is a local NGO targeting orphans and vulnerable children.

It was founded in 2006 as a result of the growing number of orphaned and disadvantaged children in slum areas in Kampala.
