Nnabagereka scoops award for promoting culture

he Ford Foundation has awarded Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, an award for exemplary contribution in promoting culture as a human right and development tool in the country

The Ford Foundation has awarded Nnabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, an award for exemplary contribution in promoting culture as a human right and development tool in the country.

The vice president creativity and education of The Ford Foundation, Hilary Pennington, presented the award to Nagginda in a colourful ceremony attended by Buganda government at Kampala Serena Hotel on Sunday.

“It has taken her personal leadership to promote culture among the children of different tribe in the country,” Maurice Makoloo the resident representative of Ford Foundation office for Eastern Africa told guests.

Makoloo said the award was vital in that it will motivate other Ugandans to promote traditional culture among the citizens.

He pointed out that award also serves a purpose to strengthen cultural institutions in the country so as to transform the lives of the youth people and women.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Peter Mayiga, hailed Ford Foundation for recognizing Nagginda’s contribution in advancing culture in the country for the good of Buganda Kingdom and Uganda.

Mayiga underscored the importance of promoting culture in fostering unity among Ugandans.

Maria Kiwanuka, the Presidential advisor on finance praised Ford Foundation for bestowing an award to Nagginda saying it was a good move to appreciate the efforts played by women who are always marginalized in society.

The award is important because women play role of home care which nurtures family, community and nation unity, ”Kiwanuka said.

She said the award signifies that the Nnabageraka Development Foundation is force to reckon in promoting traditional values in the nation.

Kabuuza Mukasa, the board of directors of NDF noted that Nagginda has made the Buganda proud of her achievement.

In her acceptance speech Nagginda told guests that her foundation is going to come up with new strategies of promoting cultural values in the country with support from Ford Foundation.

Nagginda is credited for initiating Ekisakaate which trains children and young people to value traditional norms.

She said since the Ekisakaate was started in 2004, it has imparted traditional values to over  4,000 children in the country.
