Club Music Awards 2013 nominees list out

The Nominee list for the upcoming Club Music Video Awards was finally released this Wednesday at the Kampala Serena Hotel by Club Brand Manager Samuel Hooper flanked by officials from Alexander Forbes who were in charge of the verification process.

The list is a culmination of the judging efforts by a panel of judges with experience in videos and the international music scene. They were Ugandan-born Channel O Manager, Leslie “Lee” Kasumba , South African film maker Mathew Stonier, former MTV senior producer and Huffington post columnist, Jasmine Dotiwalla and Phil Nwankwo, a talent and Music manager with Trace TV for Anglo phone Africa.

The judges said they were amazed at the high volume of quality videos in the country and that the nomination process had been fun and exciting.

“From what we have seen, there is a lot of passion in trying to make good music videos in Uganda but there is still a lot of room for even more creativity,” said Nwankwo. The judges noted that most Ugandan Music videos had so many post production effects that included clichés like bombs and fires.

“Do one or two effects that complement each other and avoid imitating America. You guys have a rich culture; I would appreciate seeing more of Uganda the country,” Judge Dotiwalla advised.

For her part, Judge Kasumba liked what she called Uganda’s “Island feel.” “Uganda has a strong Jamaican dancehall influence, I feel like I am on an Island. It is really something to place Luganda into dancehall,” she said.

According to the panel, the criteria used to nominate Videos in all the Fourteen Categories included memorability, passion of performance, choreography, costumes and wardrobes. 

The final nomination list has a number of surprises as lesser known and rookie artists triumphed over mainstream artists in number of nominations.

In the run up to the September 20th finale, the public, who will contribute 30% to overall winners per category, will be allowed to vote through a mobile USSD platform.
