Rwanda is the latest country to come on board for Sunday’s Airtel Afrika Mashariki Fest Half Marathon.
Rwanda Athletics Federation yesterday confirmed participation in the event that will have its flag-off and finish at the National Ceremonial Grounds Kololo.
“We as RAF shall send a team of elite runners. The race has a very good cause,” confirmed RAF General Secretary Johnson Rukundo.
The theme of Sunday’s event is “Healthy citizens for regional integration.” The event also has a cause to support Lake Victoria’s conservation.
Rwanda’s confirmation followed a meeting between the event’s organiser Ronex Kisembo and Rukundo at the RAF headquarters at Amahoro stadium.
Kisembo’s visit coincided with the annual MTN Rwanda Peace Marathon. He used the occasion to invite the over 10,000 participants to the Kampala event.
Participants will feature in the 21 kilometre race for men and 10km races for women.
The winner of the men’s 21km event will walk away with sh4.5m while the 10km champions will pocket sh3m. All top 10 finishers will walk away with money.
Running concurrently with these activities is an art competition with the theme “The East Africa I would love to live.” The best painting will fetch a sh1m prize and will be displayed in the region’s parliaments.
