Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championship

 

UGANDA'S representatives at the ongoing Zone 4.2 Africa Chess Championships have vowed to take full charge at the eight day contest that started Saturday at City Oil in Kamwokya, Kampala.

 

The hosts kicked off the event in high gear registering six victories in the open category and four in the women’s during the opening round.

 

On board three Arthur Ssegwanyi beat fellow Ugandan Daniel Baagadde while International Master (IM) Elijah Emojong, Harold Wanyama, Patrick Kawuma, Raphael Buti and Haruna Nsubuga beat Tadesa Estube, Yusuf Mdoe, Hemed Miawa, Primuius Kasaija and Valentin Rukimbira respectively in the open.

 

In the ladies’ category, Uganda’s Ivy Amoko, Goretti Angolikin, Phiona Mutesi and Grace Kigeni beat Feven Gebremeskel, Odile Kalisa, Daphne Mwikali and Joan Nakimuli respectively.  

 

Meanwhile national junior champion in the girl’s category Gloria Nansubuga failed to show up for her round one game.

 

The senior two student at St. Mbuga Vocational in Makindye was according to the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) preparing for her end of term exams but is likely to turn up for the round two games on Sunday.

 

In the same round, Kenya's Ben Magana held the only Grandmaster at the tournament El Gindy Essam from Egypt to a hard fought draw.
