Robert Mugisha scored the only goal as Uganda Christian University (UCU) started their University Football League campaign with victory over Kampala International University (KIU) in Mukono.

The striker headed home to register his fourth goal as a UCU player in all competitions.

The hosts have participated in only two of the university editions and will be delighted with a winning start this time round. They will also have to look ahead after a disappointing run in the Buganda Regional League where they failed to progress to the FUFA Big League after losing two finals.

UCU lost four of their best players last year but they showed just how they can weather such storms when they won their first game of a competition – something they have done for the last five years in all competitions.

And they will have Mugisha to thank. The attacker, known more for creating than scoring, nodded home six minutes after restart from a cross dropped in by left-back Cliff Kato, who has just joined the side.

The goal scorer who has played two seasons for UCU, said he took notes on headers from former teammate Fred Kyambadde – who currently plays for FUFA Big League side The Saints FC.

The last time the two sides met in the university league, KIU eliminated UCU at the quarter finals stage on the away goals rule.

The hosts would have doubled their lead 10 minutes before the final whistle but forward Billy Herbert Alinda hit wide when left with only the keeper to beat.

They needed that cushion, after KIU – the visitors – pressed for an equalizer as they looked more comfortable with the ball, but only came short moving forward.

Isaac Eishoke had the only shot on target for the visitors, seeing his effort punched over the crossbar by UCU goalkeeper George Tumwine.
