After staging the first Fighter Awards, Baltic Pro Box Promotions Group is set to venture into other projects in order to promote the welfare of former boxers in Uganda.

Among the projects is the launch of a savings scheme (SACCO) for boxers, Fighter Awards organising committee chairman Eddy Bazira has revealed.

“There is need to encourage boxers to save to ensure their financial sustainability,” he said, adding, “There are so many jobless former boxers on the streets. With savings, they should be able to access loans for business.”

Baltic Promotions is also lobbying for the creation of a Hall of Fame for legendary boxers. According to Bazira, the boxing fraternity in the diaspora is mobilising to secure two rings.

“I am satisfied with the awards because it has generated a lot of interest of potential sponsors,” Bazira said.

The inaugural Fighter Awards in which several legendary boxers including former World champions John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi and Ayub Kalule were bestowed with honour, generated a lot of anxiety at Hotel Africana last Friday.

Amidst the festive atmosphere, the event created a conducive forum for boxing great’s to share ideas with the young crop.

Kick-boxer Moses Golola and US-based boxer Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma took centre stage with attention.
