Top seed Fahad Ssewankambo will have another opportunity to justify his rating at the Kampala Open Pool Championship which gets underway at Lumas Arena on Saturday.


The Skin Samona kingpin who bagged victory in the Nile Special Open in September, comes up against a formidable field of players in the two-day event. A record 128 men and 64 women are expected in the event, according to Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) official Michael Mawanda.

Besides top guns like seed two Joseph Mutaawe, seed three Alfred Gumikiriza, Ssewankambo will have an opportunity to gauge himself against rising players including Nile Special Open finalist Ivan Kanyesigye. The championship has also drawn 10 Kenyan players including 2010 finalist Henry Mwangi, Fred Karanja, Dennis Kimani and John Chalo.

Seed four Asuman Bukenya is the defending champion of the annual ranking event which has a cash prize of sh1m for the champion.

Other Ugandan players expected to vie for honours include Oscar Ocakacon, Amos Ndyagumanawe, Jonah Turigye and Sula Matovu.

The championship will have Ritah Nimusiima defending the women’s crown. Others in the women’s contest are Sharon Mirembe, Vivian Kagoya, Carol Kanzira, Zainab Nambafu, Victoria Namuyanja, Shamim Nalugwa and Rehema Nanyondo.
