Fish bone finally removed from boy''s throat

Twelve-year-old Benon Kiirya can now afford a smile after medical experts at Mulago Hospital removed the fish bone which had gotten stuck in his throat for over two years.

Kiirya’s father, Joseph Tenywa, said the bone was removed Thursday night at around 9:00pm. Kiirya was admitted on Wednesday in Ward 3B-E.

“I am happy that the fish bone has been removed from my son’s throat. He is fine and has been discharged from the hospital,” Tenywa said.

Kiirya, a Primary Four pupil at Kidera Primary School in Kamuli, swallowed a fish bone in 2011, but all along, his parents sought treatment from traditional healers thinking they would remove the bone.

At the time the bone was in the throat, he would breath with difficulty.

Tenywa, a resident of Kidera in Kamuli, said they later went to Kamuli Healthcare Emergency, a local health unit, but were referred to Mulago Hospital for specialised surgery.
