Heathens’ rugby club whipped hosts Pirates 32-11 at Legends Kampala Rugby Club on Saturday to top the table of the Nile Special Premier Rugby league.

Leading 11-8 in the 66th minute, Pirates broke down to lose 32-11 to Heathens in a game that saw players’ tempers rise and muscles flexed.

Michael Wokorach, Lawrence Ssebuliba, Joel Kimuli and Allan Omoding scored a try each while Philip Wokorach added a try, a penalty and two conversions to earn Heathens a convincing victory.

The gulf between Heathens and second-place Entebbe Mongers is 10 points, an illustration of the nature of opposition all the other title contenders face.

Ezee Money Rhinos are in the third spot of the league standings.

Pirates coach Anthony Kinene pointed to inadequacies in experience as the cause of his side’s defeat, but promised his boys would up their performances through the remainder of the season.

“We played well, held them for 66 minutes but being young boys, they broke down but I have a promising team,” he told New Vision.

His opposite Brian Tabaruka admitted his boys were a bit lax.

“Yes we won the game at the last minute but we didn’t play well because we nearly lost it because of laxity of the players.”

Meanwhile, reigning champions Kobs became the second casualty at the ‘House of Pain’ Entebbe when they lost 28-15 to Sadolin Mongers on the same day.

The Mongers who defeated Buffaloes last week kept up their winning form when they upset Kobs in a tight encounter.

“We came determined and played as per plan which gave us victory,” said assistant Coach Ssebalamu Kigongo.

Lawrence Kalule and Andrew Olwenyi scored a try each as 2013/2014 Rugby Golden Boot winner Adrian Waswa managed six penalties to tally the final score 28-15.

Brian Odongo and Emmanuel Echodu scored a try each while Joseph Aredo added a penalty and conversion for Kobs.

Elsewhere, Buffaloes smashed Makerere Impis 46-15 while Ezee Money Rhinos were 25-10 winners over Mutoni Warriors.
