KAMPALA - Medics and patients at Mulago hospital were reduced to tears as little Zainah Mwamula narrated how she was tortured and starved in the care of a maid who lived at her grandmother's.

The maid, Nakato, rushed Mwamula to Mulago hospital in Kampala after she had pounded her with a big stick, leaving her forehead perforated, according to Dr. Happy Tukirinewe.

Tukirinewe said the little girl also sustained a broken arm and had scratches all over her body.

Mwamula narrated to horrified staff at the national referral health facility that two weeks ago when Nakato last beat her, all she could remember was the maid using a big stick to beat her on the head before slipping into a stupor. Totally unconscious.

The little girl, scarred from head to toe, said often times she went without food and her plate was always kept on the roof of a pig sty.

Her tormentor is reported to have fled the hospital after concerned staff tasked her to explain the injuries the little girl had all over her body.

Mwamula said her mother Scovia Namuli took custody of her at three years after she separated with her father, Salim Were, and put her in the care of her grandmother who lives in Nansana, Wakiso district.

The Mulago CID boss Harimah Nalule said they were working together with Nansana police to apprehend Nakato and the girl's grandmother.

Investigations are ongoing on file number SD 14/27/09/14.
