The First Lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs Janet Museveni has handed over the Moroto Boma ground to the district’s municipal authorities with an appeal to ensure it does not revert to its previous horrid state.

The ground, which was up to early last year a bare and desert-like piece of land, where whirl winds would originate from and disperse clouds of dust all over the town was rehabilitated by the Karamoja Affairs ministry.

It is now a visibly green ground and decent enough to host sports activities.

Through an initiative by Mrs. Museveni, the ministry planted green grass, trees and constructed toilets and a fence around the facility.

The grounds boast of a football pitch and basketball court.

Mrs. Museveni (inset, right) handed over the ground after a symbolic football match between Nakapeilmen and Green Stars football clubs which are two of the strongest teams in Moroto.

She said the development was an illustration of restoration of peace in the area which will subsquently attract more people.

“It would be a good idea for example to find an investor who loves golf to put up a golf course in Moroto which would be an incentive for the people on the way to Kidepo National Park who love playing golf to make stop-overs and spend some time in Moroto,” Mrs. Museveni said.

She also inspired the young people, who are the first beneficiaries to the sports facility, to cherish it.

Moroto District chairman Mark Aol Musooka thanked Mrs. Museveni for re-opening the potential of the Karimojong to participate in sports through the rehabilitation of their Boma ground.

He also thanked the NRM government for restoring peace in Karamoja, saying that the prolonged insecurity in the region for four decades had destroyed the sports loving spirit of the Karimojong.

Musooka pledged that the district would use the current peace in the area to explore the potential of the Karimojong in sports by introducing sports activities at sub-county level.
