It is not every year that a nation gets to turn 50.

It is not every year that a nation gets to turn 50. As we sing songs of happy 50th celebrating a golden jubilee of independence, the Ministry of Local Government cannot help but refl ect on years well lived and hope to continue to empower people with a view to lifting the standard of living and improving the quality of life of Ugandans. 

Uganda’s Decentralizati on Policy 

All over the world, people have strived to achieve democracy with the hope that it is the best way to att ain politi cal freedom and socio-economic development.

In many countries, a central challenge for deepening democracy is how to identi fy and adopt the right system of governance and setti ng up of key insti tuti ons that will lead the people to democratic governance.

On its part, the Government of Uganda adopted decentralizati on as a major policy reform (basing on recommendati ons of the Mamdani Commission in 1992) which was adopted in the Uganda’s Consti tuti on of 1995 that further premised the decentralizati on policy document of 1997. Read more
