Taxi drivers' strike: IGP convenes crisis meeting

The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura has summoned the striking taxi drivers for a meeting.

Various taxi drivers’ associations UTRADA, DACCA, UPPA, TAPSCOM and the Workers Union are represented at a meeting taking place at Police headquarters at Naguru.

Public transport was paralyzed on Monday morning following taxi drivers’ strike leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. A number of people opted to walk to work.

Some of the passengers who were lucky to get taxis to Kampala paid doubled fares.

Taxi drivers and boda-boda riders under their umbrella body, National Union of Drivers, Cyclists and Allied Workers (NUDCAW) are protesting what they call violation of drivers’ rights by the Kampala Capital City Authority.

According to Abdulla Kitata, the NUDCAW National chairman, KCCA has among other issues, ignored complaints and continues to use unlimited powers to levy exorbitant taxes and through its officials who impound vehicles without justifiable cause.
