Court sets date for Kashaka bail hearing

KAMPALA - The Court of Appeal has set August 18 on which to hear an application in which former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government John Kashaka Muhanguzi seeks to be released on bail.

Kashaka, 60, was convicted on a charge of causing government financial loss involving sh4b that was meant for buying bicycles for the Local Council (LC) officials in countrywide.

He was sentenced to a custodial term of 10 years and 10 days by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire.

Kashaka advanced a number of reasons why he should be released on bail pending the hearing and final disposal of his appeal. He said he appealed against the whole judgment including the conviction and the sentence.

Other grounds include being of advanced age with a fixed place of abode. He is the sole breadwinner for his family of eight children and four dependents. 

He says that come the application day (August 8), he would produce three substantial sureties who include Kampala businessman Ben Kavuya (director Rutung Invewstment Ltd), Frank Mugisha (principal procurement officer with the Uganda Government and Swaib Ssentongo, director King Fahd Primary School – Busega.  

He said he is ready to abide by the terms set by the court.
