Makerere University’s new vice chancellor will be named in June, with four professors now vying for the position.

The university Senate on Thursday named its three-member team which will line up alongside the team already constituted by the university council, to form a five-member search committee for a vice-chancellor.

The council is scheduled to meet from April 13 to April 14 to approve the guidelines for the search committee.

The search committee will then be given two months to come up with the final names to be sent to the Senate and later the council, the institution’s public relations officer Ritah Namisango said.

The council will later recommend one or two candidates’ names to the chancellor.

However, this is on condition that the process is not overtaken by the amendment of the University and Tertiary Institutions Act 2011, which will have the vice chancellor appointed by the Government, on the basis of merit.

As the search goes on, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba will maintain the top administrative seat alongside his deputies Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza (academic affairs) and Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa (finance and administration).

Baryamureeba is contesting for the top administrative seat with Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, Prof. Edward Kirumira and Prof. Eli Katunguka- Rwakishaya.

The council constituted a special meeting on March 7 and approved the process of initiating the search committee.

It elected Dr. Stephen Maloba and Bruce Balaba Kabasa. The university Senate, for its part, named Dr. Okello Ogwang, Dr. Pamela Mbabazi and Dr. Steven Nyanzi.
