LUANDA - Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto pulled out of Cameroon’s squad for the African Nations Cup on Thursday with a groin injury that will sideline him for three weeks.
The 25-year-old was substituted after 88 minutes of Spurs’ 2-0 Premier League win over West Ham United on Monday and his club later informed the Cameroon FA of his injury.
Cameroon coach Paul LeGuen has called up Neuchatel Xamax defender Gilles Augustin Binya as Assou-Ekotto’s replacement for the tournament which takes place in Angola.
Meanwhile Fulham defender John Pantsil has been forced to withdraw from Ghana’s squad for the African Nations Cup finals after picking up an injury, the Ghana Football Association said on Thursday.
He will miss the tournament in Angola after twisting a knee in his club’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea. Ghana have named Derek Boateng of Getafe as replacement, association spokesman Randy Abbey said.
Ghana are grouped with Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Togo at the tournament. They play their first game against Togo on Jan. 11.
