RESIDENTS of Lango sub-region have expressed shock over the death of Dr. Naphtali Akena Adoko, the former head of the general service unit, during the Milton Obote I regime.
Akena Adoko, the independence-era spy chief who played a role in destroying Idi Amin’s government, died of cancer of the kidney, in a London hospital on Friday after living in exile for decades.
The mood in Lira town was somber as the news about the death of Obote’s cousin was aired on local radio stations. People gathered around in small groups to discuss the news.
The Lango paramount chief, Won Nyaci Yosam Odur, said Lango had lost a great man. Akena had contributed towards the development of the region and the country at large.
“It is sad that most people who went into exile were coming home dead and yet through reconciliation and forgiveness, all of them can return home and stay safe,†he added.
Akena was a lawyer and an American educated social-anthropologist with a masters and doctorate degree in comparative law.
Abubakar Adoko Nekyon, the head of Oyima clan to which Akena Adoko belonged, said Akena was among the few highly educated Langi.
Adoko told The New Vision on Saturday that arrangements to bring the body for burial were underway. But he did not disclose when the body would arrive and where the deceased would be buried.
Robert Olet Egwea, a former consultant with the British local government, described Akena as a mentor and a role model to all Ugandans abroad.
The Lira LC5 chairman, Franco Ojur, described Akena as a great man whose intelligence would be missed by many people.
