KAMPALA Amateur Volleyball Club men’s team must return to the drawing board to find the right formula to beat old foes Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC).
The Ugandans fell 3-2 to the Rwandans at the semi-final stage of the Amicale International volleyball championships in Bujumbura over the weekend.
Ejecting KAVC in the tightly contested tie was sweet revenge for the victors for a defeat by the Ugandans in last year’s KAVC Memorial at Lugogo.
Outstanding blocking by coach-player Titus Toma, Richard Tamale and the towering Amon Ainebyona and the spiking forces of Alex Nduhukire and team manager Peter Buyungo could not inspire KAVC to victory against a more relaxed KVC side.
KAVC lost the first set but recovered to take two other sets before losing the fourth and the decisive set. KAVC had reached that stage after they topped pool A in the preliminaries. KVC and KAVC were the only foreign teams in the championship.
The other semi-final pitted Burundi Police, Rukinzo, against their army colleagues Muzinga which the soldiers won in three straight sets.
Muzinga then stopped KVC 3-0 in the final to lift the 2010 trophy. The KAVC team was expected back by press time yesterday.
