A dormitory of St. Edward’s Bukuumi was on Wednesday night razed down by fire. According to the school authorities, there were no causalities, though property worth of millions of shillings was destroyed.

under the care of Brothers of Christian instruction, Bukuumi is one of the oldest missionary founded schools. The school is based in Kibaale district, 20 kilometres from Mubende town.

The fire, which gutted Ludigo dormitory, burnt to ash students’ mattresses, clothes, books, shoes and basins.

The asbestos roofing the dormitory caved in. The cause of the inferno, which affected 34 students, has not yet been established.

The dormitory captain, Denis Mutegesi, said: “Light is the dormitory went dim and we instantly saw smoke.”

Three Bibles were among undamaged items found in the debris.

The Kibaale acting district Police commander, Michael Ogwal, said all students were attending night preps when the fire broke out. He ruled out power short-circuit as a possibility for the outbreak of the fire. The school’s head teacher, Brother Deodat Aganyira, said it was a regrettable incident, but the school would not close.

“The school will continue running as we organise for a parents and teachers meeting,” he said.
