BISHOP Nankyama became the first team to win the COPA Coca-Cola Cup on debut on Saturday.The Luwero champions made history by beating former eight-time champions Kibuli SS 1-0.
Dan Oyirwoth netted the crucial goal against his former school to ensure the trophy goes to Luwero for the first time.
Nankyama coach Benedict Kiwanuka could not believe they had won.
“I cannot believe it. This is a sweet reward for my 15 years of hard work,†explained the 56-year-old coach.
Kiwanuka has been the man behind youth football at Kasana Academy.
Nankyama underlined their determination for victory after beating defending champions Buddo SS 1-0 in the semi-final.
Buddo had stopped favourites St. Mary’s SS Kitende 4-2 in the quarterfinal. But despite the fall, Kitende’s Eric Ssebuguzi went on to win the golden boot with 24 goals.
Nankyama’s keeper, Matia Kigongo, who was instrumental in their semi-final victory over Buddo SS was declared the player of the tournament.
The two-week event drew a record 81 teams countrywide.
