FRED Wanzala held off a late charge by his national team compatriot Emma Opio to win the Eskom Source of the Nile Golf Tour in Jinja on Sunday.

Wanzala, who carried a two-stroke lead into the final round having shot level par 72 on day one, scored 75 on the final day to win the title.

Wanzala, with an aggregate of 147, beat Opio by a single stroke in the two-day event dominated by the host club members.

“He narrowly survived but I am happy the title has remained in Jinja again,” Opio remarked.

The win saw Wanzala score his maiden Uganda Golf Union (UGU) championship points to squeeze into fourth spot on the standings.

In the professional event, Deo ‘Yellow Boy’ Akope recovered from five shots down on Day 1 to win.

Herman Mutaawe and Vincent Byamukama were second and third respectively while day-one leader Denis Anguyo faltered in the closing round.

Eskom Uganda and Stanbic Bank sponsored the tournament which attracted 144 golfers.
